Tammana looked at the teacher with a look of surprise and bewilderment. It wasn’t that what he was explaining she couldn’t comprehend, but her mind was elsewhere and all of a sudden she had been jerked awake. Her day dream was broken and she couldn’t actually understand how she was in a room full of students vying for teacher’s attention when she was far- far away in her own land.
She tried to get herself together and focus on the lecture but within few minutes she lost interest again and as if on its own accord her pen seemed to be moving on paper and she again went back to her own world- the world that she was creating- a world where everything was according to her.
She never even noticed when the class got over, mechanically saying yes when her name was called for the roll call. She never noticed her classmates calling her for lunch- she did not consider them her friends, she had always been too isolated and temperamental for having friends. The only people she had ever considered friends were right now far away and seemed to be too involved in their own life to care about. Her attention was only broken when her cellphone vibrated causing her to look up and she was startled to find herself in an empty classroom.
She looked down at her cell phone and smiled. It was message from a person who belonged to the past life. A life she had almost forgotten- shutting down all the memories of the past was the best way to avoid getting haunted by it. She did not like to think about it all but this person’s remembering her always brought a smile on her phone. This person, Sumo or Sumedha had helped her survive it all without ever knowing what was wrong or bothering Tammy, she was always there for her and it was this memory that brought a smile to her face
Sumo had messaged her to wish her. It was her birthday-even she had forgotten about it. Except for phone calls from her parents at midnight no one has wished her. Of course she didn’t expect them to as she had removed her birthday notification and birthdate from all the social networking sites which everyone frequented. Doing this had given her immense pleasure as she had created her own dark world and sunk into an oblivion she liked.
Tammy’s concentration was now broken and she all of a sudden realize that she was hungry. She looked at her watch and decided that she could grab a quick bite from the cafeteria and return back in time for the next lecture. This realization also brought with realization that the next lecture was Finance. She almost groaned aloud- she had no idea how she was going to survive another lecture specially a Finance one.
She was on her way to cafeteria when her cell started vibrating again. She looked at it and the smile that Sumo’s message had left automatically hardened and changed into a frown. The last person she had expected to call was calling her and that too on her birthday. It was her ex- boyfriend who was calling her- just another person she wanted to forget forever.
Seeing his name flashing on the screen brought back memories that she thought she had forgotten. She thought of ignoring the call but on second thoughts picked it up. The voice on the other side seemed relieved. She could make out that he hadn’t really expected her to take the call. He wished her and both of them tried to make small talk for few minutes but it was all in vain. Their conversation seemed strained and unnatural.
Tammy let out a sigh after disconnecting the phone. She was relieved that the ordeal of talking to Abhi was over. Abhi or Abhimanyu was her ex boyfriend who had always forgotten to wish her on her birthday in the five years they were together- even though it was copiously displayed on all social networking sites he frequented and today he remembered. “What an irony”, thought Tammy, while returning to the classroom without any lunch as her few precious lunch minutes had been eaten away by the phone call.
